  • Xanga Destination Blogs - Your Opinion

A while ago, we started launching destination blogs for all the Xangans here to dig into topics they enjoy.  We have a bunch of topics now, from video gaming to motherhood and a bunch of stuff in between.  If you really are passionate about the topic, you can even submit a post to appear in the blog.

The thing I've noticed though with all of these sites is that everyone has very different opinions of them.  Some people love them and are always reading and leaving comments for the topics they enjoy.  Some are indifferent to their existence and don't care whether they exist or not.  Some even hate them with a passion and do whatever it takes to stay away from them.

I'd like to know why you guys feel the way you do!  Are you a classic Xangan and don't care to see these new destination blogs?  Do you dislike the sites because they take up too much space in your universal inbox or subs page?  Do you dislike them because they take up spots on the front page that could have been a Xanga blog?  Do you love them because you can keep up-to-date on different topics?  Are you indifferent because you have issues with the content?  Any reason at all for why you feel that way, I wanna know!

I write this because I'd love to get some feedback from everyone and hopefully make these sites better for those who enjoy the destination blogs and less annoying for those who dislike them.  It's all about making things better here on Xanga, so let's make it happen!

  • Billy Mays is dead and I'm sad

I met the guy 2 weeks ago at a BBQ festival that OxyClean was sponsoring.  He was a really cool guy.  My girlfriend and I even got a great picture with him.

After meeting him, I honestly felt like I knew him.  He was happily chatting with people and signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone.

I also totally love Pitchmen.  Watching Billy and Sully bicker and mess with each other was hilarious.

Really sad to see him go.

  • Webcomic Convention

I'm gonna be attending a webcomic convention for Left-Handed Toons at the end of July.  We're gonna have a table there and I'm sure it's gonna be awesome.  Only problem is, I really have no idea what to expect.

We are gonna be selling some t-shirts and copies of our new book, which will be pretty fun.  But because we've never done this before, we don't have a clue how many could sell.  To play it safe, we are getting a lot of t-shirts and books ready, so most likely we will have some extras.  But even if our over estimates are off and we don't have enough merchandise, then I will be making this face: =(

It will be a lot of fun to talk to fans and chat with other webcomicers that are attending.  Heck, maybe we could even make some cool guest strips on the spot for each others comics.

Have any of you guys ever gone to a webcomic convention?  What did you end up doing there?

  • IP Blocking for Xangans

    Let's chat about IP blocking!

Right now, our blocking system does have some limitations.  If the user you blocked registers a new username, they will be able to come to your site and be potentially bothersome again.  Then you'll have to block a new user and keep doing this until they give up.  Also, if that user logs off, then they'll be able to check out your site unless you turn on signin lock, and no one wants that.

So the next obvious level of blocking is IP blocking.  This would block every IP address that the blocked user has used from viewing your site.  This seems pretty sweet, but there are some downsides.  For example, if the user was on a public computer, like one in a high school computer lab, it would block every single person using that computer from viewing your site who wasn't logged in or wasn't subbed or friended to you.  There are a lot of public places that use one IP for a bunch of machines, so you could inadvertently block an entire computer lab at a college from viewing your site if they weren't logged into Xanga.

One big downside is that IP blocking could really agitate this person.  This might make them try even harder to keep trolling and that's not good.

So IP blocking can have some big consequences, but it would be all up to the user to decide if it's worth it.  What do you guys think IP blocking would accomplish?  Would it make the situation worse?  Would it help the cause of keeping the user off your site?  Whatcha think?

  • Bug Fix Friday!

Lemme know about any bugs you may have seen!  First, some updates on previous issues.

Emails going to hotmail and yahoo addresses.  You should have begun receiving your alert emails for comments and such sometime this week, but the subscriptions emails may still be having problems.

We also had a server issue on Wednesday that would have affected some people uploading photos between 8AM and 2PM EST.  This same issue affected search.xanga.com as well.

If it doesn't seem related to those, leave a comment!  I've heard a couple issues of some people not being able to work on themes, so I would love to try and fix those up today, along with anything else that may come up!
